کتاب پیانوی خودنواز

اثر کورت ونه گات از انتشارات سبزان - مترجم: زهرا طراوتی-داستان پاد آرمان شهر

Kurt Vonnegut’s first novel spins the chilling tale of engineer Paul Proteus, who must find a way to live in a world dominated by a supercomputer and run completely by machines. Paul’s rebellion is vintage Vonnegut—wildly funny, deadly serious, and terrifyingly close to reality.

Although the dystopic world seems quite derivative, the Americana focus saved it for me.

I particularly liked the merging of the unique Native American names with places and events as a buoy for our future.

I liked, too, the focus on Managers and Engineers—such truth here—as well as the direct link between the new, sophisticated machines and a disenfranchised class—so prescient now—over half a century later.

The Corporate Party with all of its company and Type-A implications as ironically linked to the tree was just great and absolutely fitting as the turning point of the novel.

The characters, too, were quite memorable.

This book is smart, and funny, but here are some warnings:
- All characters with any depth are (white) men, including managers/engineers who run the country and the people whose lives have lost meaning due to technology controlling everything, who are compared to @[email protected]
- Women characters are very few, and they are two-dimensional, shallow, and ridiculous.

The predictions that Vonnegut makes about how human work functions will be replaced by machines are really smart, but being immersed in this world where all women are content being shallow, dumb, and powerless, made me feel terrible.

At a friends suggestion, I gave Vonnegut a second chance, not allowing myself to be impressed by the flippancy of his Cats Cradle in high school. Picking up three of his other novels, I delved into them, one after another. While the others were highly entertaining, Player Piano, the most ostensibly serious of the lot, was almost a painful read--perhaps because Vonnegut was still learning the craft of writing.

Not the best Vonnegut. Confused message, rather boring plot, and not even funny. The only interesting aspect for me was the old science fiction standpoint, seeing a little how people in the past thought the future would be and how it might be different if it were written today. But Id skip this one in general.

Well written and far reaching is this original first Vonnegut publication. So much so that it could easily have been written today instead of six decades earlier. Amazing. 8 of 10 stars
